A cool charity you might like to check out is The Heifer Foundation. They give livestock to profoundly impoverished people throughout the world so that they might overcome hunger and poverty, encouraging them to start their own agro-businesses in hopes of becoming self-reliant. Their livestock gifts include cattle, oxen, water buffalo, goats, sheep, camels, llamas, donkeys, pigs, rabbits, ducks, geese, chickens and even beehives. They also provide tree seedlings, training people in agriculture and agroecology methods. http://www.heifer.org
Another great charity is The Nature Conservancy, whose mission it is "to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive." The organization purchases endangered land throughout the world in order to protect it from development, while also working with the legislative bodies of various governments to insure further environmental protections of land and water. http://www.nature.org
In America, http://www.petfinder.com is an excellent resource to find animals in dire need of being adopted. You can find pure breeds there, but I urge you to consider their mixed breeds. They have hybrid vigor, thus making them generally more healthy throughout their lives. Rescue pets sense how close they have come to being lost forever, and greatly appreciate their new families for saving them.
A cool website you might want to visit is http://www.freerice.com. Everytime you answer a vocabulary word correctly on their quiz, rice is donated to needy people. You improve your vocabulary, and hungry people get to eat. It's a win-win proposition.
