Well, it seems to go on forever So much farther than you'll ever go But you dream and somehow you get there And it's changed you more than you know
It could be the endless blue ocean It could be a question of why But you'll see an object in motion Will keep moving if you only try
You might think you'll never be happy That it's over before you begin Don't you know that everyone's been there They kept moving and didn't give in
There it is, that place in the distance That you've dreamed of, you know the one Don't be shy, don't yield to resistance Just keep moving leave nothing undone

"Proverbs are always platitudes until you have personally experienced the truth of them." - Aldous Huxley
Platitudes and Proverbs
You need air Can't catch your breath Something's wrong Put your finger on it Settle for this you'd settle for anything Living down to expectations
All the little things add up to something big Acts of omission feel like sin Platitudes and proverbs don't bluff You couldn't care anyless I don't complain enough
New tricks and old dogs Never made the best friends Like old scars Broken hearts never mend Everyday you struggle to say something good Best you get is misunderstood
All the little things add up to something big Acts of omission feel like sin Platitudes and proverbs don't bluff You couldn't care anyless I don't complain enough
The night is long The dawn will break In the light of day choices are mistakes Shrug it off what it's worth Bad sure feels good when it gets worse
All the little things add up to something big Acts of omission feel like sin Platitudes and proverbs don't bluff You couldn't care anyless I don't complain enough

This is actually one of Sting's early songs recorded with Strontium 90. It hints at a tragic side missing from the pop version of the early 80s. Shawn Colvin arranged a great guitar cover which tampered effectively with the chord structure, but the only rendition that completed captures the essence of the words is a performance by Julie Collings which can be found on You Tube and also downloaded from iTunes. Do have a listen. I heard it first on 'Coverville (an amazing cover filled podcast).
There's a besotted infactuation here, but also a concern that his feelings are not likely to be shared and understood by the object of his affections. He suffers 'a thousand rainy nights' worshipping her from a distance unable to share his true emotions just in case he ruins the way she makes him feel when they meet.
She's oblivious and he'll settle for just being with her rather than losing everything. It's a sad and impractical compromise he's prepared to make with himself. Being in the presence of such a magical person makes bareable the inner torment of knowing his unrealistic dreams will remain unrealised for eternity ('goes on... and on').
I wrote a song called 'Safety in Numbers' that covers the same subject matter. Us blokes are such sensitive flowers aren't we? Sting uses yoga to help him. I have Pinot Grigo!! Feel free to tell me I'm talking absolute bollocks. My wife does frequently!!
