Indian classical music system has its origins traced, to one of the oldest of human sciences: The Vedas. Spiritual science, arraying the essence of life. As science of laws,of universe n life n reason n respect,there aint much like the Vedas,on earth to this day: in sophistication, ancientness,linguistics or its sheer size.They were cultured-artistic, alligned mathematic-phonetically-perfect, as Sanskrit hymns and mantras,to be passed on orally,from age immemorial through countless generations.Shreds of it started being written down later on, for us.The rest,lost forever..One reason,western scholars think Sanskrit as the mother of western languages includin Greek, Roman,latin n English.

Derived from it,Indian classical music science,is based on raagas(melody) and taalaas(rhythm), the melodic form upon which the musician improvises. Traditionally practice-oriented, based on spot improvisation,rules out notational medium of instruction,understanding, or transmission.Not based on harmony,counterpoint,modulation,chords,and dynamics.No sheet music, no written tradition and other structural elements as Western (classical) music.. Its intriguing,in the absence of any of above,how could it still be the largest and one of the most sophisticated,in depth and complete musical systems- developing,maturing through the dawn of Human civilization and still, transcend to this day.
The secret is in Indian culture itself. "India has one of the oldest-longest running, ever evolving cultures on earth. Scholars around the world can trace countless scientific, mathematical, agricultural, spiritual, artistic, and philosophical innovations of mankind to Mother India,the musical science is proof enough".
Classical Indian music n instruments're entirely based on the classical Indian Vocal music system,its oral tradition,to this very day. Taught orally from a guru (master) to a shishya (Learner),in person.Dividing the octave into 12 semitones of which the 7 basic notes are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa,in order (In Western classical music its: Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti and Do). A student takes a life time (birth) of saadhana (practice,devotion and discipline) and guidance under a guru (Pundit) to be able to put the breath of life (praana) to any raaga. A teacher -amidst the secrets of vibrant and incandescent performance- imparts to his pupil, the use of shrutis(microtones; Indian music uses smaller intervals than Western music: 22 microtones within an octave), gamakas (sort of glissandi) and andolan (a sway, but not a vibrato).
Sure,less appealing and hard for a layman,tougher than formulas in physics,lol.

Universe, life, history, future, music, our own thoughts and deeds: to Indian spiritual science, most things are Vibrations good or bad, powerful or weak(The law of Karma). The Vibrations in any of the above forms,orginates only to hit back the source, the very same way it originated(humans with just five physical senses may not feel 'em all).Raagas, are simply collection of some great vibrations.The same scientific, precise, subtle and aesthetic melodic forms practised and passed down to us by the ancients. Since Vibrations could be of immense power or weak, but simply doesnt have a language, Raagas could be played on most
instruments or any language, one reason it doesnt have any written notations. But definitely not played any time,any where. As vibrations are so associated with cycle and laws of life, maths and universe :before dawn,late afternoon,season of the year etc.
Ragas are based on 72 melaas or parent scales.It is estimated that some 6,000 Indian raagas are left now,for us.A Raaga,a science of vibration, taking hours to develop and learn,to be used.
With its own peculiar ascending and descending movement a raaga consists: either of a full seven note octave, or a series of six or five notes (or a combination of any of these) in a rising (Arohana )or falling(Avarohana) structure,a specific chalan - or characteristic note
pattern,this pattern inturn defined by its principle important note (vadi), its second most important note (samavadi), its main feature jaan (life) or mukhda (face).A subtle difference in the order of notes, an omission of a dissonant note, an emphasis on a particular note, the slide from one note to another, the use of microtones together with other subtleties- they demarcate one raaga from the other,by which a raaga is instantly recognizable.
As each raaga is principally dominated by one of the nine rasas (human emotions).The closer the notes of a raga translate
emotion, the more resounding the effect of the raga.As Pundit Ravi Shankar puts in "90 percent of Indian music may be improvised","The spiritual quality and manner of expression [of a Raaga] cannot be learned from any book.Two main systems of Indian classical music:Hindustani,North Indian and Carnatic music,South Indian.
