A friend and I spent two nights in the Judge Clarke Woodruff suite about four months before this video was made; I felt the four-poster bed move while I was in it, and the alarm (never set) on a TracFone went off several times until we removed the batteries. On the morning of the third day we went downstairs and a docent was leading a group of middle school students on a tour. Two of them insisted on shaking our hands when they discovered we had spent two nights alone in the house!

A wonderful performance, but you have mis-identified the artist. It is not contralto Rosa Olitzka, but mezzo-soprano Marie Goetze (1865-1922). The number, 15216, is not listed in Barnes & Girard's "Verticle-cut Cylinders and Discs" but 15215 is a Goetze title, and part of a series of 2-minute waxes she cut in Berlin in 1905. Also, the announcement at the beginning clearly is "Frau Goetze."

I have always enjoyed Abott's records, but the comments about her "variable technique" are right on the money. Her principal teacher seems to have been the noted coach Fidèle Konig, who was, if nothing else, a great booster of self-confidence. I really think her Victor disc of "Caro nome" is the best of all...her voice has such a silvery quality, and there is that very real sense of innocence...

Oh, be still my heart. Does anyone remember when he was first starting out that Snoop Dog and Usher were practically fighting over who was going to mentor him? You could almost hear them..."He's MINE, bitch! I saw him first!"

I agree with you on the twangy aspect, but not necessarily on the brightness. This is, after all, a piano transcription (and a mighty good one) of an organ prelude. It would be especially interesting to hear it played on a straight-strung Erard or Pleyel which would give more clarity and definition to the voices in the fugue. That said, isn't Hannes TERRIFIC?!!

I was thrilled by your performance of this in Portland on December 2nd...it was really hair-raising! Also, it was the first time hearing the Shostakovich Sonata no. 2. I told Louis McCraw, one of the sponsors, that he should buy you a double vodka...I hope they gave you a good dinner afterwards!!!
