The Scramble for Soil and What Lies Beneath
The scramble for the earth's natural resources has intensified tremendously in the past decade. Countries such as India, Japan and especially China have seen a huge increase in demand for both minerals and agricultural commodities. The countries producing these resources are reaping the benefits, but also suffering the often devastating consequences.
Millions of tonnes of everything from copper and gold to soy and grain are shipped across the world's oceans everyday. This is the fuel that keeps the commodity dependent economies of the East and West growing. But what are the costs to the donor countries? How does mining affect the lives of the children who work in them, such as in Ecuador? How do productivity-enhacing farming methods, such as GM crops, affect the local farmers in the countries where they are produced? And will demand for rare commodities such as lithium spell a trade bonanza for countries like Bolivia? This project looks closely at the world boom in natural resources, at those who benefit and those who suffer.

This project looks at several genocide crime scenes from around the world and tells the stories of those who lived through the most heinous of all crimes.
