She-Ra: Princess of Power is an American animated television series produced in 1985 by Filmation. It is a spinoff of Filmation's highly successful He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, aimed primarily at a young girls' audience to counter-balance the latter show's popularity with boys. As was the case with its predecessor, the show was based on a toy line by Mattel (titled Princess of Power, itself a spin-off from Mattel's Masters of the Universe line) and was produced with financial backing from Mattel to promote the toys. The show follows the adventures of She-Ra, He-Man's twin sister, who is leading a group of freedom fighters known as the Great Rebellion in the hope of freeing their homeworld of Etheria from the tyrannical rule of Hordak and the Evil Horde. She-Ra makes her début in He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, a full length animated movie that was created by compiling together the first five episodes of the-then forthcoming syndicated series: "Into Etheria", "Beast Island", "She-Ra Unchained", "Reunions" and "Battle For Bright Moon". The series premiered in 1985 and was cancelled in 1986, after 2 seasons and 93 episodes. Reruns aired on USA Network from September 1988 to September 1989. Reruns of the show currently air on the Qubo Night Owl Block, and on the Retro Television Network, as well as Teletoon Retro in Canada. She-Ra first appears alongside He-Man in the theatrical film The Secret of the Sword, which eventually became the first five episodes of the She-Ra series. She-Ra is He-Man's twin sister who was kidnapped at birth by Hordak and taken to Etheria, where she served as a Horde Force Captain before being rescued by He-Man and joining the Great Rebellion. With her Sword of Protection Adora can become She-Ra; just as Prince Adam can become He-Man. After reuniting with her parents she decides to return to Etheria.

By the time the animated series was developed, He-Man's origins had been revised as follows: his true identity is Prince Adam of Eternia, son of King Randor and Queen Marlena, an earthling, who rule the Kingdom of Eternia on the planet of the same name. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull endows Prince Adam with the power to transform into He-Man, which Adam does by raising his Power Sword and proclaiming: "By the power of Grayskull." Once the transformation is complete, he continues "I have the power!" The differences from Prince Adam and He-Man are minimal, He-Man possessing a slightly deeper voice, and with slightly darker skin and hair. Prince Adam's pet is a cowardly green tiger named Cringer. When Adam becomes He-Man, he similarly transforms Cringer into a brave armored green tiger named Battle Cat by pointing his sword at him - an ability Adam discovered accidentally the first time he turned into He-Man; Cringer, naturally, cowered in fear at seeing what Adam had become and while reassuring him that nothing had really changed, Adam pointed the sword at Cringer, which sent a bolt of energy toward the tiger and transformed him. Battle Cat has served as He-Man's steed and fierce fighting companion ever since. Adam is friendly with the beautiful and strong-willed Teela, who, unbeknownst to her, is the daughter of the Sorceress. Teela was adopted by Prince Adam's mentor, Man-At-Arms (proper name Duncan). Adam and Teela grew up together, and now, as Captain of the Guard, Teela is entrusted to protect the prince. She often sees Adam as lazy and cowardly because she is unaware of his alternate identity as He-Man. Man-At-Arms is He-Man's closest companion and the Eternian royal family's innovator of technology and weapons. In many episodes, Man-At-Arms unveils new and fantastic weapons or devices that help He-Man and his friends. Prince Adam Castle Grayskull is the source of He-Man's powers. Inside the Castle lives the Sorceress, who grants Prince Adam his transformative abilities, and communicates telepathically with He-Man. To protect his family, He-Man keeps his double identity secret, sharing the knowledge only with Orko, Man-At-Arms, Cringer/Battle Cat and the Sorceress.
