Using the steering to transfer drive power from one wheel to the other can be very useful, but the best traction is still often achieved by keeping the wheel perfectly straight.
Sawing the wheel back and forth can alternate drive power to the front tires, which is very handy to keep you moving over very rough or slippery ground.
Steering back and forth alternates power between drive wheels and transfers weight from side to side, often giving the vehicle enough traction to move forward over very difficult terrain.
