The time is 1930's southern Appalachia. A small coal mining town of close-knit people proud of being who they are and where they come from. Blooddletting was at its worst between the coal operators and the coal miners. A timeless story that still speaks loudly in todays world of the poverty that exists and the hardships for our hardworking coal mining families and how their strength as a people and their love of the earth from which they come holds them together and keeps them going even when the days and the nights seem unbearable. Here we meet two women, Sheryl Stephens and Addie Hall, and the obstacles and adversity they face, and the hard existence they are left to live when both their husbands are murdered by Ned Hunter, the owner of the coal mine. Dr. Phil Hunter, the son to soulless Ned Hunter, has come to the southern mining town from New York as the town doctor under his father's direction. As a boy, Phil grew up ashamed of his father and his lack of decency and cruelty to others, and it is here in the Appalachian hills that he forsakes his father to do what is right and good for his fellow man at his own expense and safety.
