The films on this channel were created by the UK Government in the 1970's to be shown in the event that a nuclear war was predicted between the UK and Russia. They will show you how to survive, protect your family and live with the effects of a full scale nuclear attack.

If events in the cold war took a turn for the worst, these films would have been broadcast on all TV stations back to back to allow the public to prepare. Audio versions were also created for the radio. In reality, nuclear war would have been far worse than these films portray as they were designed to give people hope and to prevent panic if the worst came.

The films were narrated by the actor Patrick Allen and made by Richard Taylor Cartoons.

These films belong to the UK Government but can be used freely for non-profit, educational purposes.

Hi, as you can see the channel has been updated to make it much more modern. Of course, I will change it back if viewers prefer, leave some feedback!

Even if these series are legitimate, it will still be a lose-lose situation. I agree with some people and from the BBC docudrama "Threads" your chances of survival are slim even if you take the most stringent precautions if such an attack were to occur.

Hello!

I was wondering why you have not made any modern Protect and Survive Videos.
The current videos are circa-1980's, now that more and more advances in technology have been made (Mobile phones, home computers, the internet, etc.) there are more ways to keep informed. It's also important to tell if these can work, how to use them, and if to use these at all during an attack.

Again, this is just a suggestion.

WE MUST PROTECT AND SURVIVE!

Tornado and bad weather season will be upon where I live in the Southeastern United States. I'm taking this stuff to heart except the fall out. One more module I'd add would be is how to handle aftermath like looters. From my experience of having everything spared including myself, a standing house beings attention of "flies"

I find you post to be very interesting. The problem is that despite all the criticism these sorts of broadcasts may have incured is there is no proof as to their effectiveness. More then likely these methods wouldn't have been effective due to the immediate damage and panic, but the simple fact is there hasn't been a nuclear bomb used in anger since 1945, hence we can't be absolutely sure of these methods described here. The only way we can be sure if any method works is if there is something to base the method on.

Thank you so much for preserving this important record.
Still pertinent even now.
As a child of the nuclear age, this material continues to chill me to the bone and remains poignant as other nations pursue nuclear goals.
Let others look and learn what "living under the nuclear umbrella" infers - "Protect and Survive" = "What little most people can do to prepare to kiss their sweet ass goodbye".

Thanks for presenting this often ridiculed but nevertheless important part of the history of British PIFs. Looking back, you can see how chilling some of these films are, and how ineffective some parts of our civil defence plan would have been should they have needed to enact it.

The only minus point is that you are missing film #7 "Materials to use for your fall-out room and refuge", 1:55 (not to be confused with film #9 "What to put in your fall-out room", 3:03).
