Again, thanks for your gentle honesty on the subject of religion and non belief. It is a refreshing change from the hostile rhetoric of extremists from both camps. However, please don't become an apologist for hard line anti-religion bigotry. It is well and good to understand and be compassionate about why an extremist has fallen into their delusional world view, however, one should never excuse evils done in the name of extremism, of either stripe.

(cont.) I can't respect any of the "leaders" responsible for keeping this evil (yes, EVIL) alive. They terrify me far more than any vision of "Hell" they'd like to conjure up. In particular, their idea of what makes a "Christian" nation is a death threat to my quintessentially American freedom of religion and conscience, and to that of every other person in this country.

If defending my freedom of religion means defending your freedom of NONreligion against infringement "in God's name," count me in.

The brand of extreme $#!+ you talk about gives all us Christians - and all too often by extension all people of faith, and even the idea of faith itself - a bad name. As a 50-something Baptist Preacher's Kid, I've seen far too much harm done to the innocent, the needy (in both the financial and emotional senses), and the unaware who get taken in by it - and to persons and groups in the outside world - to think otherwise.
