WATCH US AT "PINASWATCHERS"

It has become fashionable to heap scorn on the youth for being an apathetic lot. We are often derided as the crazed generation of party-goers, mall creatures and texting fanatics who have little or no sense of civic duty.

We are accused of forgetting the nations past in favor of MTV. The young know more about the lives of Startruck/Star Circle Quest winners than Wenceslao Vinzons, Lorena Barros or Lorenzo Tanada.

We are labeled as belonging to Gen-X, Y or Z (now Gentext) or the lost generation who wanders aimlessly in the postmodern era.

Rizal may be either regretting in his grave for placing high hopes on the youth or biting dust in anger on people who mocks the youth without reason.

I submit to the charge that we prize hedonistic activities, and yes we are addicted to TV, texting and mall-hopping. I disagree that we are apathetic or has no concept of social responsibility.

Is not the active participation of the youth in People Power II enough proof to erase any doubt on young Filipinos? In fact, students have been knocking at the gates of Malacanang even before the Chavit expose to protest tuition increases and budget cuts for the education sector.

Indeed we are text maniacs but we also use texting to gain political victories for the people like spreading Erap-Pidal-FPJ jokes, updating the public on EDSA Dos activities and recently, pressuring Speaker De Venecia and Malacanang to thumb down the proposed tax on text.

There were moves to abolish ROTC as early as the 60s but it was our generation who achieved the goal by boycotting military training in July of 2002 as protest to the killing of cadets who wanted reforms in ROTC.

The generation before us opposed the Vietnam war and the US Bases by marching in the streets. Our generation protested the illegal invasion of Iraq by joining then Vice President Guingona in a Peace Assembly at Luneta last year. So far it remains the biggest gathering of Filipinos who opposed the war in Iraq.

Scholars are now re-interpreting the complaints by American Thomasites such as the refusal of Filipino children to attend school, making-up of stories in order to skip classes and being oblivious to the lectures given by the foreign teachers as the natives ingenious way of showing dissent to colonial rule.

Perhaps this partly explains the behavior of some young people who are disillusioned with the kind of society we have. By withdrawing from the community and concentrating on oneself or forming ties with like-minded, angst-driven, confused individuals, they hoped to be immune from the corrupting virus of mainstream culture. By rejecting politics, they wanted escape from uninspiring, shallow and greedy traditional politicians.

It is unfair to gauge the youths love of country today by comparing them with how the youth of the 60s and 70s demonstrated their concern for the ills of society. We also want change. We also want to eradicate poverty, corruption and injustice. All of them are obstacles to a bright future. We may not be using the streets as often as before, but the passion and idealism to be catalysts for change have not diminished.

Aug. 5, 2009 Burial Day Declared Special Holiday
Manila, Philippines—Malacañang has declared the funeral of Corazon Aquino on Wednesday a special nonworking holiday to allow more Filipinos to pay their last respects to the countrys democracy icon, who died on Saturday. It is but proper for a grieving people to be given the opportunity to honor and show their respect, appreciation and gratitude to the beloved former President in their own respective ways, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said in Proclamation No. 1851. Ms Arroyo earlier signed Proclamation No. 1850 declaring a period of national mourning from Aug. 1 to Aug. 10, with all Philippine flags flying at half-staff.

Former Philippine President Corazon Aquino dead at 76
August 1, 2009 (CNN) -- Former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, whose "People Power" movement pushed out longtime strongman Ferdinand Marcos less than three years after her husband's assassination, has died at age 76, her family announced Saturday. "She was the agent of change in Philippine democracy," said Ray Donato, the nation's consul-general in Atlanta. 1 of 3 Aquino, the first woman to lead the Philippines, had been battling colon cancer since March 2008 and died of cardio-respiratory arrest at 3:18 a.m. Saturday (3:18 p.m. Friday ET), said Mai Mislang, a spokeswoman for her son, Philippine Sen. Benigno Aquino III. "She was the agent of change in Philippine democracy, and almost all the Filipinos I know revered her during her presidency," Donato said.

MUSLIMS CONDEMN ATTACKS IN MINDANAO AND PRAY FOR THE VICTIMS
7/18/2009 Manila (AsiaNews / Agencies) - "This is not a conflict between Muslims and Christians. We resolve not to allow these dastardly acts to successfully sow suspicion and animosity. The group of Muslim associations Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS) has thus commented on the attacks of early July that hit 5 cities in Mindanao causing 12 deaths. They are asking the government to clarify what happened through an inquiry led by an "independent and credible body. The risk of speculation is high and could cause a rift in dialogue between Christians and Muslims. They argue that "many of the reports after the attack in Cotabato are ambiguous. They put the bomb inside the cathedral, while the explosion took place near the building. The Muslim leaders continue, saying that "the people of Mindanao can not allow a return to confrontation between Christians and Muslims that bloodied the island in the 1970s.

PHILIPPINES: Sharp increase in IDPs after Mindanao bombings

MANILA, 14 July 2009 (IRIN) - Displacement levels on the war-ravaged Philippine island of Mindanao have risen to more than 430,000, according to data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other sources.

This marks a significant increase in the number of internally displaced people (IDPs), from an estimate of 290,000 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in mid-June.

However, DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral, whose office is the lead agency for IDPs, stressed the scale of the problem was not enough to categorize it as a humanitarian crisis

Arroyo allots P10M for 'peace' task force in Mindanao
7/16/2009 President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the release of a P10-million fund for a new task force formed with the government's renewed effort to talk peace with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The "Health, Education, Livelihood, Progress Task Force for Central Mindanao" was created as Mrs. Arroyo signed Administrative Order (AO) 267.

The President appointed presidential peace adviser Avelino Razon Jr. to lead the task force composed of 12 government agencies.

Mrs. Arroyo cited in the new AO the need for a concerted effort from various government branches in dealing with the MILF. She said in the AO that the peace effort should be "pursued simultaneously in a coordinated and integrated fashion.

Among the tasks of Razon's group is make sure that residents displaced by the ongoing war between the government troops and the separatist Muslim group will be able to return to their homes.
