The independent scene has grown, developed, diversified and now serves as an umbrella term for rock, surf pop, avant-garde, electronica and all manner of sub-genres. Here are some current favourites to delight and challenge the senses.

With the advent of home recording taking a hold on an entire generation of bedsit and garage geniuses, there is no likelihood of this letting up in the foreseeable future. Hooray!
