A Irish claim of soventry over the region known historically as Cúige Uladh one of four historical provinces, the republican claim for the land however is also expired or dead in law, hundreds of years out of date. The reason? The concept of Nations States is a relatively new one. The concept of Unifying Regions or Individual Smaller Kingdoms was experimental in Europe and certainly not a guarantee of permanent status.
In many areas of Europe and the United States, we have seen National borders constantly change. The United States for example borders has changed tremendously both North and South, especially with Mexico (Including heavy fighting at the battle of the Alamo as recently as 1836). In deed in Northern Ireland the border has changed. But a common misconception is that Ireland has ever been a nation state.
Ireland was conquered by the Normans and then the English. If we go back in Irish history to 1691 when Plantations were set up of English and Scottish people moved to another land it is almost identical to the plantations of early America, Australia, Canada or New Zealand. In that indigionious peoples were displaced as a new and more dominant Nation and Culture was implemented.
The successful plantations and for many generations the inhabitants of Northern Ireland and the Nation State of Ireland (Eire) entered a peaceful resolution to live together in harmony after a brief period of war.
In 1960 hundread of years later however certain Irish Republican Terrorist groups wished to go back on that historic agreement, that afforded both parties their freedom. Terrorist tactics were used on soft targets such as the murder of Woman and Children (The killing of Woman and Children was Not even seen at the Battle of the Alamo) In an attempt to terrorize innocent people and intimidate a National Government. In an effort to ethnically cleanse Northern Ireland of her one million strong hard working loyalist population.
Irish Republican Terrorist are still unfortunately around today linking into the global web of terror by meeting anti-American Columbian Marxists for weapon training and giving out punishment beatings to boys as young as 13 as well as dealing drugs and pirated merchandize.
The good people of Northern Ireland deserve the respect after all they have sacrificed to democratically decide their future. According to a 2007 opinion poll, 66% express long term preference of the maintenance of Northern Ireland's membership of the United Kingdom (either directly ruled or with devolved government). The truth is stranger than fiction, if one is not romanced into beieving IRA propaganda and down right lies.
