Ha, the only way I know how to do that is by replacing the guts of the sign with something different.
Hacked LED sign

Thanks! Ha, good idea. I ended up taping down a couple of round pens for it to slide across, so that they had less surface area to grind across- that seemed to work pretty well.
Also, reducing the amount of etchant so that it just barely covers the board seemed to help.
