You have to reach in behind the trim in the trunk and pull the lid open. You can also "pry" the door open with a small screw driver. Just be really careful.

Nothing about this story is surprising. Just look at the place. Do you really think that kind of place will give you top notch service? I am sure there are some good buy here pay here places. They are VERY few and far between.

Don't shotgun a clock spring. You need to get the code for what is going on. Ask the dealer if they will just give you the code and NOT diagnose the issue. They should not charge you for that. If they do, it should not be more than $30 or so.
Is there another dealer, or an indy shop near you? Pulling a code seriously takes 5 minutes.
There are a few things that are common on your Passat. Clock springs(usually the horn stops working too) and the wiring under the seats. Was the recall done?

It is a 2005(B5.5). It was the last year of that body style. Your 2006(B6) was the first of that body style. I swapped the wheels from a Passat like yours. ;)
As far as the tires. The control arm bushings may be worn, but you would probably hear them making noise. I would get the alignment checked anyway. The alignment can be out(enough to wear tires) and still track straight.
What type of tires do you have?

@denny,
Thanks for your concern ;) I would like to think that it is no worse than the crap I breath all day at work. Well, that what I am hoping for anyway. LOL!

@Canoso,
Not really sure. It will depend on how bad the damage was. If it not bad, meaning no engine damage, it will be in the $2000 or so range. The transmission has to be removed to replace the timing chains.
This type of damage can ruin a lot of seals too. After taking this engine apart, I found that 4 of the 6 pistons had damage. They are trash. That is due to extended driving with a car overheating.
If you just have a blown headgasket plan on +$2000 if you have someone do it for you.

I picked that up at Kroger. It was pretty cheap, just under $7 for 5lbs. I have seen some other videos maybe I didn't use enough.

That is the road I plan to head down. I am not sure I will strip it to bare metal. I think that I want to keep it red. How cool will it be to have a car that was done "Overhaulin" style!
