I just posted an answer to your post about the German Zapfenstreich on YouTube. In my original post, I assumed I was answering a Yank, so I used the American term 'taps' instead of 'tattoo'.

In the USA, 'tattoo' usually refers to something blue which is willingly applied to the skin all imprisoned criminals, and, increasingly, anyone under the age of 40 wants to look like one ;o)

When the Zapfenstreich ceremony is performed in German cities, it hits a sensitive nerve because of its connection to the semi-recent fascist past. To quote the American comedian / math professor Tom Lehrer: 'We taught the Germans a lesson in 1918 and they've hardly bothered us since then'.
