Gerard van Reenen

W.A. Mozart - Sonata KV 283 in G major - Gerard van Reenen

Mozart wrote his sonatas for harpsichord, fortepiano or clavichord. I play this sonata on my Christophe et Étienne harmonium, built in 1880. It has 3 sections: 1. Allegro; 2. Andante (at: 7:40); 3. Presto (at: 12:45). Playing sonatas of Mozart on harmonium is very unusual. Yet, it is not as strange as most people think. Mozart did play the organ. A lot of organs in the time of Mozart had registers with free reeds. These registers have a sound, the harmonium alike. Besides that, the first harmoniums appeared about 25 years after his death. Nowadays it is quite common to play Mozart on the modern piano. But this instrument has its beginning just in the second half of the 19th century. So, playing Mozart on a modern grand is more disputable than on a harmonium.
