Fantastic Planet (1973)

Adapted from Stefan Wuls novel(La Planete Sauvage), this psychedelic sci-fi animated movie depicts a social catastrophe on the far distant alien planet Yagam, run by the Draags, highly intellectual, spiritual, blue-skinned, red-eyed giants. Their household pets are tiny, pink-skinned bipeds called Oms who were brought from the planet Terra. Fed up with the maltreatment from their owners, the oppressed Oms decide to start a rebellion to achieve equality and a better life. But the Draags are determined to exterminate the entire species once and for all. Fantastic Planet was the winner of a 1973 Cannes Film Festival grand prize.

The Day After (1983)

Few American movies have dealt as graphically with nuclear holocaust as The Day After, which accounted for the controversy that surrounded the telefilm at the time of its initial network broadcast. In previous films, nuclear warfare was a matter for crusading politicians or military might, but here, both are kept in the background (the airman played by William Allen Young is more concerned with returning to his new wife than his duties) and the focus is fixed firmly on middle America--literally so, as the setting is Lawrence, Kansas, the near-center of the country. Audiences are briefly introduced to a representative cross-section of American life, including a doctor (Jason Robards), a young bride-to-be (Lori Lethin), a graduate student (Steve Guttenberg), and an academic (John Lithgow), before the Bomb hits nearby Kansas City. The ensuing destruction is utterly horrific, but a few manage to survive to struggle vainly with rising radiation levels and the slow, inevitable collapse of society. As a protest vehicle, The Day After is a triumph--its scenes of nuclear devastation remain the most powerful statements against nuclear armament ever depicted. It's buoyed by strong direction from Nicholas Meyer, who previously specialized in fantasy (Time After Time), and a capable cast who weather the material with grim determination.

DAYWORLD

DAYWORLD is the first in the Dayworld trilogy of science fiction novels by Philip José Farmer. The story is set in a dystopian future in which an overpopulated world solves the problem by allocating people only one day per week. For the rest of the six days they are "stoned," a kind of suspended animation. The novels focus on a man, Jeff Caird, who is a "Daybreaker," someone who lives more than one day a week. He is not like most Daybreakers; he belongs to a government defying group called the "Immers". The Immers are a very large and powerful group that works to create a better government. Not all Immers are Daybreakers, so to get messages and information from one day to the next, they have Daybreakers, like Jeff, to work in every day. The Daybreakers of the Immers assume seven different personalities and seven different jobs. They slip from culture to culture, in seven different worlds. As Jeff goes from day to day, he runs into problems while working as an Immer and as a Daybreaker, and must cover his tracks, all while trying to keep up with his seven different lives, families, friends, and jobs. Starship Troopers(audio book) by Robert Heinlein

Starship Troopers takes place in the future in the midst of an interstellar war between the Terran Federation of Earth and the Arachnids (referred to as "The Bugs") of Klendathu. It is narrated as a series of flashbacks by Juan Rico, and is one of only a few Heinlein novels set out in this fashion. The novel opens with Rico aboard the corvette Rodger Young, serving with the platoon known as "Rasczak's Roughnecks" (named after the platoon leader, Lt. Rasczak) about to embark on a raid against the planet of the "Skinnies," who are allies of the Arachnids. We learn that he is a cap(sule) trooper in the Terran Federation's Mobile Infantry... Charly (1968)

Wizards (1977)

Although disjointed in its approach and tone, Ralph Bakshis WIZARDS is nothing, if not, an interesting exercise in animated storytelling. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where fairies and other magical creatures have reemerged upon a slowly recuperating Earth. Also emerging in the war scarred sections of the planet are the mutants created by the nuclear fallout. Eventually, two brothers are born into this world; and although, polar opposite in nature both grow to be powerful wizards. Avatar, human in appearance, practices natural magic and lives in the greener lands of Montagar. Blackwolf has the appearance of a mutant, and after doing battle with his brother, has been exiled the radioactive wastelands of Scorch. After the passage of three millennia, Blackwolf has built his powerbase fusing magic with forbidden technology and the ideology of Nazi Germany, all with a single purpose- to defeat his brother and claim the greener lands for him and mutant followers. WIZARDS features the vocal talents of Bob Holt, Steve Gravers, Jesse Welles, David Proval and Mark Hamill.
