August 28th, 2005. PRIDE: Final Conflict 2005.
This is truly the clash of the titans as K1 Superstar Mirko Cro Cop is finally granted a title shot at the enigmatic Pride Heayweight Champion, Fedor "The Last Emporer" Emelianenko.
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic gained notable recognition for his success in kickboxing promotion, K1. However, Cro Cop's popularity would sky rocket as he transitioned from K1 to Pride Fighting Championships, which was the mecca of worldwide MMA talent. After victories over Josh Barnett, Alexander Emelianenko, Wanderlei Sivla, Kazushi Sakaraba, Heath Herring, Igor Vovchanchyn, and a dominating performance against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (although he did not win that fight), he was finally granted a long anticipated championship bout. Cro Cop is famous for his one-deminsional style, in which his most powerful aspects are having world class takedown defense, elusive counter-striking, and an infamous high left head kick. Cro Cop is also known for his stern nationalism.
Little was known of the mysterious Russian, Fedor Emelianenko, as he quickly blitzed through the ranks and captured the heavyweight championship from a then undefeated (in Pride F/C) Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Fedor would continue to showcase his talent against all fighters of all disciplines, even challenging and beating them at their own games (as seen against Nogueira and Garry Goodridge). Fedor has never been defeated inside the Pride Fighting organization and still continues to school the heavyweight division today as he fights under new MMA promotion, Affliction. Fedor is known for his emotionless in-ring professionalism, quick and wild heavy-handed striking both in stand up and in guard, and agile submissions from almost every position. Emenlianenko is considered by many to be the best fighter in the world, pound for pound.
Fedor watched Cro Cop's Pride carrer flourish towards an eventual title shot. It was after winning against Fedor's teammate, Ibragim Magomedov, Mirko was allowed to officially and publically issue a challenge to the champion.
Two months later they meet at PRIDE: Final Conflict 2005.
REMATCH:
As of today, there have been no talks or negotiations for a rematch. However, in several out-dated interviews Mirko has stated that a rematch would eventually be sought after. Since then, nothing has materialized.
Also to be noted, both fighters were seen at the opening Dream Fighting Championships press conference. Fedor was there in support of the new organization, representing his manager's Russian MMA promotion, M1 Global. Cro Cop was in attendance after signing on with Dream after being released by the UFC. Fedor has since left M1 Global and pursued a contract with Afflicition while Cro Cop continues to fight on the other side of the world in Japan within a completely seperate organization. The chances of them meeting again are very slim as it stands today.
