I hold a PhD in geology (2008). My thesis examined how the Irish landscape changed during the Neogene, I discovered that Neogene tectonism created topography, due to the fluctuating intraplate compression of North Atlantic Ridge push forces and the Alpine Orogeny. I also, studied Epithermal mineralisation in the area, and I discovered a ~12 million year old fault line using radiometric dating. The bottom line - Ireland has very young mountains made of old rock.
