About Me:
Derek Jaeger has been busking at the underpass in Neasden, under the
North Circular Road in north-west London, for the past decade.
The 38-year-old is the son of a Danish father and Irish mother. He spent much of his early childhood in Copenhagen before the family returned to Galway.
However, most of his family now live in London.
Derek says that he was always keen on singing and he recalls that he began singing as a child, when he used to sing the Boney M number "Mary's Boy Child" to friends.
Ten years ago, when he and his ex-partner needed money to buy nappies for the family, he went out to sing on the subways and underpass at Neasden.
There was a very favourable reaction from shoppers and pedestrians and in no time at all muggings and other crimes in the vicinity rapidly began to fall.
Derek now has a band of his own and performs ballads and modern songs, in nearby Harlesden and in Colindale as well as in Neasden itself.
Derek quipped: "One of my regular fans brings me Guinness."
On occasions, the Irish busker is joined on Saturday nights by other musicians, and he is often asked to perform at parties and wakes.
"It's not just Irish music I perform," he said, pointing out that he plays modern numbers and his own compositions, mainly romantic ballads.
Local people have widely welcomed the fall in the level of muggings, but on one occasion Derek was robbed of 95 pence worth of takings, which the thief returned when Derek pointed out how little money was there.
