Afrekenen met ING (Zembla)
ING heeft onlangs de grootste overheidssteun gekregen in de Nederlandse geschiedenis: 43 miljard euro. Aan de vooravond van de jaarlijkse aandeelhoudersvergadering vraagt ZEMBLA aan een aantal topmensen van ING wat er de afgelopen jaren mis is gegaan. Hoe heeft ING zo kunnen groeien zonder dat de gevaren daarvan waren afgedekt?
ING is te groot geworden om failliet te laten gaan. Als ING failliet gaat, staan we drie dagen later stenen door de ruiten van bakkers te gooien om aan brood te komen. Het is net zo belangrijk als water uit de kraan, zegt Hans Maarten Slagter, directeur van de Vereniging van Effectenbezitters. Het gevolg is dat de overheid keer op keer moet bijspringen om te zorgen dat ING niet omvalt.
Risico
We zijn op een punt gekomen waar we nooit hadden moeten komen, aldus Harald Benink, hoogleraar Banking en Finance. Banken durven meer risico te nemen. Men weet dat als het goed gaat we veel geld verdienen en als het verkeerd gaat, dan is de overheid altijd aanwezig om de bank te redden.
Dat is onzin, zegt Koos Timmermans, Hoofd Risico van ING. Het is niet zo dat de ING risicos neemt, omdat we weten dat de overheid er wel achter staat.
ZEMBLA spreekt met drie topbestuurders van ING: twee leden van de Raad van Bestuur, Koos Timmerman (Hoofd Risico) en Eli Leenaars en met Hans Verkoren, oud-directeur ING Direct, de internetspaarbank van ING.
Met een balanstotaal van 1332 miljard euro, meer dan het Nationaal Inkomen van Nederland, België en Luxemburg samen, is ING het grootste financiële bedrijf ter wereld.
