"The Grand Rapids LipDub Video was filmed May 22nd, with 5,000 people, and involved a major shutdown of downtown Grand Rapids, which was filled with marching bands, parades, weddings, motorcades, bridges on fire, and helicopter take offs. It is the largest and longest LipDub video, to date.
This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a "dying city." We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean's "American Pie," a song about death, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope." - Rob Bliss, Director & Executive Producer

This song was recorded by the Cotton Pickers on February 9, 1923, and was released as Brunswick 2404-B. The band was put together by Brunswick for purposes of releasing blues/jazz foxtrots, and its personnel changed over the years. When I first made this video I mistakenly used a photo of McKinney's Cotton Pickers after the image of the 78RPM label, as I thought that was just the complete name for the group. Search as I might I could not find a vintage Cotton Pickers photo, so the image I used here includes the covers of two Cotton Pickers CD's, as well as the following musicians who were associated with the group (although I do not know if all of then actually perform on this recording): Phil Napoleon (trumpet); Bennie Krueger (saxophone); Irving "Miff" Mole (saxophone); Frank Signorelli (piano); and Frank Trumbauer (saxophone). The website redhotjazzd.com explains that back in the 1920's record companies would give "black" sounding names to white groups, such as the Cotton Pickers, to give them an appearance of greater authenticity with the record-buying public. I assume that is why I could not find a group photo of the band. On the other hand, I was able to find several vintage photos of McKinney's Cotton Pickers. They were an African-American group, so it seems there was no need to hide them from the public.
I used a Yeti USB mic by Blue Microphones to record the 78RPM record, playing the record on a Victor Talking Machine Co. gramophone, model V-II. The photos of New Orleans were taken by me between 2004 and 2007. I make a cameo appearance at the end of the video with a photo taken of me in Jackson Square back in the summer of 2004.
The Red Hot Jazz web site was the source where I found the photos of the individual members of the Cotton Pickers.
This compilation copyright David Magdziarz 2011 PS: For various technical reasons I had to upload and then delete this video about a half-dozen times, and I really hope this is the final time I need to upload it. PPS: One last delete and re-upload. I noticed that the final image appeared about a half-second too early -- before the final bit of music. This, now, I hope is the really final version.

Thomas Edison's version of "A Chriustmas Carol" which was released on December 23, 1910. The music comes from 78RPM records in my collection, and from recordings I found at "The Virtual Gramaphone", which is part of the Library and Archives Canada website. Merry Christmas!
