Q&A
Q: Are these videos pre-recorded or lip synching or something?
A: No. All of the songs that you hear on this channel are performed live vocally from beginning to end, except "Don't Lose Your Soul" which was created for a video competition.
Q: When did you start uploading videos?
A: The first video I uploaded was on June 23rd 2010. It was a live performance for my Dad's birthday party. All the rest of the videos were performed live to camera, some are recorded with a microphone while others are just clean. The music was played on a computer or a PA system and the camera picked up the all the ambient sound (dogcollars and coughing and dishwashers can be heard in many of the recordings).
Q: Do you have any original songs?
A: Absolutely, but I'm a little reluctant to release them all here in this format.
Q: How do you write a song?
A: In the case of my originals, I write mostly with an acoustic guitar (sometimes piano), record the music in a studio without vocals, then I sing them live to video. (For the technophiles, I use a Sony Handycam XR550V) with my studio music playing in the background on a Vocopro Champion.
Q: What effects do you have on your voice?
A: There are no effects or enhancements or editing of the audio. For some of the videos I am using a microphone, but if you listen closely, you can hear that some of the mixes are a little bit uneven because each and every song is live from beginning to end. You can hear all of the imperfections and the uniqueness of each performance.
Q: Why don't you record these songs professionally?
A: I'm trying to recreate a little bit of the simplicity of a live performance, like they used to do on TV and variety shows, because those are the performances I enjoy watching and listening to. I find a lot of current music is ridiculously overproduced.
Q: How do you decide which 'take' to upload?
A: Each video is selected from several takes for a reason. Sometimes it's kept because it's funny or interesting or amusing to us, but usually it's uploaded because it is the best vocal take.
Q: Do you mind if I copy or share or post your videos?
A: I do not mind at all. In fact, I encourage it. Feel free to share, post a video response, embed, favorite, feature, comment, re-edit, upload, make suggestions and recommend any of my videos. I want people to hear them so...spread the word.
Q: Do you have anything to say to your listeners?
A: Most importantly, I want to use this space and this opportunity to thank you all for subscribing and friending me and listening to my songs and making so many wonderful comments. I read and appreciate every single word you all send to me. Unfortunately, I'm a little disorganized so I don't know who I've responded to and who I have not, but I do my best in some kind of random way. If you are patient, eventually I will respond to each of you.
Q: Do you do all this by yourself?
A: No. I want to send out a very special thank you to Deborah and David Beament. They both help with location and technical support and filming and such. None of this would be possible without them. So I thank you both.
