2. An Electric car does not pollute if you generate clean energy.

3. An Electric car requires MUCH less maintenance. Fix your windshield wiper motor lately?

4. Charge your battery for commuting, Swap your battery for long distances.

Yeah, my buddy is an engineer's assistant at Tesla. We were talking today about building a generator trailer for the Leaf, and it's really tough. The motor pulls about 12kW on average on the highway, and peaks at 80kW! There's no way you can get that kind of power from a reasonably-sized generator. I think we could make do with a lightweight Honda 12kW portable, but I'm suspicious the thing would totally barf going up hills. You get into some real weight issues too. It's another 300-400 pounds you're adding to the thing.

I'm hoping to test drive the Leaf in November when it comes to SF to see how much power it really has...

You don't run into a supply issue if you only use biodiesel for sporadic long trips. 99% of the time, most commuters won't need it, which is why plugin hybrid-electrics aren't as optimal as pure electrics with detachable trailer... the engineering is tough though. ;)
