***What Is MMD LIVE?***
"MMD LIVE" is a homemade project that attempts to recreate the feel of a live VOCALOID concert on a small scale. Using holographic-illusion (Pepper's Ghost) technology, MMD models appear to move in 3D space on a miniature stage without the need for a projector. All images are photographed live and are in no way digitally composited or "green-screened" into the video. This is NOT Augmented Reality. My goal is to make a complete "concert" by posting various songs with Vocaloids performing them on this stage.

***How it Works***
Optical superimposition of virtual images - a technique known as Pepper's Ghost which has been modernized in the Musion Eyeliner system.

I'm a college student, retired electronics experimenter and student cameraman.

Project Background:
I first discovered Hatsune Miku after signing up for AX 2011. After a quick YouTube search, I was hooked, wondering how in the world a virtual diva could perform live on a stage. However, by that time, Mikunopolis tickets were sold out and I was disappointed at not being able to see her first-ever US performance. By a fortunate turn of events, some tickets were left and I got one of the best seats in the house! After attending the concert, I was both amazed and motivated. I noticed that at some points, light from the screen would obscure certain parts of Miku's outfit, making it hard to see the detail the programmers put into the animation. With the desire to correct this distracting problem, I set out to create my prototype of this holographic device which does not use projectors or projection screens when constructed on a small scale. While VOCALOID concerts are incredible to behold, I believe that I have found a way to further improve the technology used for displaying virtual characters on stage. The technology utilized in my videos works on a life-sized scale as well, so I invite you to re-think VOCALOID concerts as I demonstrate this simple yet impressive display method. This is MMD LIVE!
