Hundreds of protesting students in Montreal were dispersed by police using tear gas on Friday. The students had been demonstrating against a hike in tuition fees.Two police officers and at least two protesters were injured in the clashes, and 17 people were arrested. The students were protesting outside Montreal's Palais des congrès Friday, where Premier Jean Charest was speaking at a symposium on northern development.

Over 100 people died when a Pakistani passenger plane en route from Karachi to Islamabad crashed near Chaklala, Rawalpindi, on Friday. Initial reports indicated the plane was on fire before it crashed, with officials announcing a full investigation has already been launched. Eyewitnesses reported that there had been heavy rain and lightning at the time of the crash. According to local reports, the plane also destroyed several houses in the crash, but residents escaped unharmed.
