In election year 2012, the U.S. Congress will be considering a new Farm Bill, the government's primary means of setting food and agriculture policy. The current Farm Bill has been criticized by public health experts for subsidizing crops used in ingredients -- such as high-fructose corn syrup -- in unhealthy foods. In the late 90s, Broadway Housing Communities began incorporating art and arts education into its supportive housing model. Fast forward to its new Sugar Hill project, a green model, affordable housing, educational and cultural arts mixed-use development on the boundary of Harlem's historic Sugar Hill. Combined with permanent, rent-stabilized affordable housing, The Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art and Storytelling plays a key role in this comprehensive community revitalization effort. In addition to galleries, workshops, a library, and courtyard spaces, this museum will include pieces by children, in concert with works from renowned artists, to deeply connect young museum-goers to the value of their own artistic exploration. A licensed early education childhood center and an afterschool program will host museum-based early childhood education. The speakers will discuss integral components in designing this dynamic tenant community to help build stability and productivity among the residents and in the community.

Happy accidents do happen! It began in 1929 as a four-page flyer, "The Amateur Astronomer." Six years later it grew into "The Sky." In 1939, facing difficult financial times, it joined forces with "The Telescope," a journal published at the Harvard College Observatory, and became the most popular magazine of modern-day astronomy, "Sky & Telescope." This event celebrates the 70th anniversary of this iconic publication where amateurs and professionals present their latest accomplishments and discoveries to the world.
