It depends upon how far back you want to go. If you want to look back thousands of years you will need to do a genetic analysis of your y-chromosome. If you turn out to be I2a2 (like me) you will know that on your paternal side you are indigenous to Europe and that your ancestral fathers came from present day Croatia or Bosnia for over 15,000-20,000 year ago.
