You know, having studied jazz and being a very open (and strange, must I say) person, I kinda say that everything that's music can have a place here, though my most important influences comes from the progressive movement of the '70s. This results in some of my favourite bands being Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Harmonium and Alan Parsons' Project, to name a few. My first steps into music came from the band System of a Down, then more speed metal stuff, like Metallica, Slayer and Anonymus (notable because they're from Quebec). Blend them two and you get progressive metal! To name a few: Dream Theater, Circus Maximus, Andromeda, Sonata Arctica (which got a bit of prog in their recent albums). To sum it all up yo (!), all that's not "growl-and-don't-understand-anything-my-dog-can-do-the-same" and all that's not too commercial (like "emo-punk-MTV-search-and-bleed-cut-your-hair-mr.piercings" stuff, no examples needed). For hip-hop, all that's groovy and basically not "bling-bling" (like 50-cent, Snoop Dogg and those kind of wannabe rappers who rap about girls, cash and drugs...) For jazz, my favourite periods have to be Be-bop, free jazz along with hard-fusion stuff. For classical music, I love Bach's stuff, but my time period has to be the Romantic era, with those long epic symphonies from Brahms, Mahler and Dvorak, to name three. I don't particularly like vocals in classical music. I think it ruins the presence of the orchestra. Other stuff: I LOVE (with extra-large fonts) video game music. I love 8-bit music as well.
