Speaker Boehner Welcomes Archbishop Dolan's Letter to Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan Washington (May 19) House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement regarding a letter sent by Archbishop Timothy Dolan, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), in response to a letter by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) discussing the principles underlying the GOP budget:"I welcome Archbishop Dolan's letter and am encouraged by the dialogue taking place between House Republicans and the Catholic Bishops regarding our budget, the Path to Prosperity. Our nation's current fiscal path is a threat to human dignity in America, offering empty promises to the most vulnerable among us and condemning our children to a future limited by debt. We have a moral obligation as a nation to change course and adopt policies that reflect the truth about our nation's fiscal condition and our obligation to future generations, and to offer hope for a better future. Our duty to serve others compels us to strive for nothing less. As Chairman Ryan notes in his letter to the Archbishop, Americans are blessed to have the teachings of the Church available to us as guidance as we confront our challenges together as a nation."

Statement by Speaker Boehner As United States Reaches Legal Debt Limit WASHINGTON, DC (May 16) House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement today as the United States reaches its legal debt limit: "Americans understand we simply can't keep spending money we don't have. Spending-driven deficits, record debt, and the threat of tax hikes are smothering our economy with uncertainty and making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers. As I have said numerous times, there will be no debt limit increase without serious budget reforms and significant spending cuts -- cuts that are greater than any increase in the debt limit."As the Baby Boomers begin to retire, the thousands of Americans being added to the Medicare and Social Security rolls every day are an urgent reminder that we need to act now to protect those in or near retirement and save these programs for future generations. Half-measures and gimmicks won't get the job done, and tax hikes will only hurt job creation and do more damage to our economy. House Republicans have passed a serious plan by Chairman Paul Ryan to put us on a path to balance the budget and pay down our debt, spur job growth, and save programs like Medicare for current retirees and future generations. In fact, under the House-passed plan, there are no changes to benefits for Americans 55 and older. Speaker Boehner Files Amicus Brief Supporting the Unconstitutionality of the Job-Crushing Health Care Law Washington (May 11) House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today filed an amicus brief in support of the U.S. District Court ruling that found the job-crushing health care law unconstitutional. Speaker Boehner's brief, filed in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, GA, supports a lawsuit brought by 26 states and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), the nation's largest small business association.In the brief, Boehner argues that the Obama Administration, in its defense of the individual mandate, has distorted the "necessary and proper" clause of the Constitution to vastly increase congressional power, compromise the integrity of the legislative process, and undermine accountability to the American people. Speaker Boehner's original brief in the case was cited by U.S. District Court Judge Roger Vinson of Florida in his January 31, 2011 decision overturning the law. "While we continue working to repeal the job-crushing health care law, I'm proud to stand with these states and job creators in their efforts to overturn this government takeover that is destroying jobs, increasing costs, and jeopardizing coverage for millions of Americans," Speaker Boehner said.Earlier this year, 200 economists and experts wrote to congressional leaders detailing how the health care law's "expensive mandates and penalties ... create major barriers to stronger job growth." The new House majority continues to pursue efforts to repeal and replace the law as part of the Pledge to America, a governing agenda built by listening to the people.
