After another hour of driving with nothing more in sight, something hit me. “Joe, did you ask where we were?” “Ugh, crap! I was so hungry I didn’t even think about it. Oh, that makes me mad!” “It’s okay. We can figure out at the next stop.” “What if the next stop isn’t until tomorrow?” “It’ll be fine.” “I hope so.” 1 day ago, LA police station. “Calm down, Denise. Everything will be okay,” Dad said to her comfortingly. “I know, I’m just nervous. That’s all.” Frankie had fallen asleep on the bench and had used my body to keep him propped up. I looked over to Kevin, who was talking on the phone with Maya, telling her the latest news. Marie’s mom rested her head on her husband’s shoulder, and she was trying very hard to stay awake. Jenny, Marie’s little sister, who was about Frankie’s age, had curled up with her head in her mom’s lap. We were waiting to see if the call could be traced, and it was taking just a little too long. They had given us a private room usually used for interrogations since there were so many of us here for one specific purpose. Finally the familiar face of the investigator emerged through the doors. We all, all of the awake ones anyway, immediately stood up. “We were able to trace the call successfully,” he said hopefully. “And?” Mom asked, her voice filled with anxiety. “And it appears as if this phone is located in the upper left part of Texas, where the border juts out, close to New Mexico.” “Texas,” Mom said. “We have a home in Texas, but nowhere near there.” “Right, so we are thinking that they definitely weren’t at that location at their will. If they were released, they would’ve tried to come back to L.A., because that’s where you guys are right now.” “Exactly,” agreed Dad. “We have already called the investigative group in Texas, and sent them the coordinates from the tracing. They should be on their way immediately, but it will take awhile. And remember, there is no guarantee that they will be there. Just because they made a phone call from there doesn’t mean that’s where they’re being held. Chances are, we will find someone there who, with some persuasion, can tell us their whereabouts. Now, who was the one who actually had the phone conversation with Joe?” “Me,” I perked up, eager to help them in any way possible. “Do you mind telling me the details? Did he say anything important?” I searched my mind for the conversation, trying to remember every word. “He um, said something about a guy named Jay, and just that they were both okay, and he said that they were in some sort of desert.” “The Chihuahuan Desert. So they are or were close to there.” He drummed his fingers on the table for a minute. “I think the best thing to do is to go home and try and get some sleep. There’s nothing more that you all can do here. If there is any news, we will let you know.” “I’m not going anywhere,” Mom said, stubbornly. I smiled subconsciously. She looked a lot like Joe when she said that. “Ma’am, you really need your rest.” “I really need my son,” she shot back at him. “What do you propose to do then?” “I think we should go to Texas, too,” she said thoughtfully. “All of you? That would be a bit much to get two whole families down there. What if they aren’t even there?” “Aren’t you going, sir?” she asked the him “Yes, it’s part of my job." “Well, then I’ll be going as well.” “Denise,” Dad interrupted, “I know you’re worried but, we can’t all go up there, and you certainly can’t go alone,” he said, concerned. Suddenly I got an idea. “I’ll go with Mom,” I answered. That would solve both of their issues, and I would get to see Joe and Marie sooner, hopefully. The two looked at me and then at each other. “I think,” Mom slowly said, “that’s a great idea.”

“Uh, never mind.” I needed to try a different approach. “Um, if you had to say your last words, what would they be?” He shrugged and then stole a glance at me. “I don’t know. What were yours?” “You—you didn’t hear mine, did you?” I was really starting to lose it now. “If I had heard, I wouldn’t be asking.” “Oh,” I must say I was sort of disappointed, but I didn’t know why. “So what were they?” Joe pushed for me to tell. “Just forget about it. Nothing that would interest you.” I sighed and leaned my head against the window again. Joe looked at me for a minute before turning back to the steering wheel. Without my permission, my eyelids began drooping. I tried to force them back open several times. “Sleep, Marie,” Joe said softly as he rubbed my shoulder. My surroundings slowly blackened and I drifted into a fitful rest. I woke with a start, slamming my head into the glove box. “Ow.” I rubbed my forehead. That was going to leave a mark. I turned to my left slowly. Joe wasn’t in the seat next to me. “Joe? Joe!” I began freaking out before I realized that we were at a convenient store, so conveniently placed in the middle of nowhere. I relaxed as I saw Joe exiting the store with a big brown bag. He opened the door happily. “Morning, sunshine.” I gave him a smile, still not totally awake. “What happened to your forehead? It’s really red.” “I’m fine. I just hit it when I woke up.” Now that he mentioned it, it really was starting to hurt. “Are you sure? It doesn’t look so good.” He leaned forward to get a closer look. His face was only inches from mine. As he focused on the growing knot on my head, my eyes darted from his eyes to his mouth a few times before he pulled back. “Hopefully the swelling won’t be so bad, but you’ll have a nice bruise.” “Lovely,” I mumbled as I rubbed my temples. He was driving me crazy. I can’t focus on anything when he gets that close to me. I can’t even breathe. “You seem chipper,” he said, sarcastically. “Want a snack? I bought tons.” “Yes, please. I’m starving.” I grabbed the first bag that my hand touched: chips. Fine by me. I devoured the bag in only a few seconds. Whoops. I bet Joe thought me a pig. I looked over to see him throwing back some peanuts. Nope, I think I’m good. I grabbed another back: cookies. I like the way he shops. I ripped it open and began eating. Famous Amos never gets old. Joe put the key in ignition, and the old engine began rumbling. After another hour of driving with nothing more in sight, something hit me.

Hahaha, ok so first it's Holy cheesesticks...and then Holy monkeys AND tomatoes!!!! Hahaha amazing! Thanks for all the comments so fast! You guys are awesome :)
When night fell, I brought my feet up and wrapped my arms around them and leaned my head on the window, trying to catch some sleep, but I couldn’t. I worried about Joe falling asleep on the road, so I wanted to try and keep a conversation going as long as possible. “So, you never did tell me how you got out of there with that guy’s gun.” “It was simple really. Whenever He got you out, He tossed the keys to his assistant or whatever he is. I slipped out of the cell as He was leaving the room with you. After He closed the door I just attacked him and took his gun.” “You shouldn’t have done that with your rib.” “Hey, it got us out of here, didn’t it? And anyway. It didn’t matter. I wasn’t thinking about my stupid rib. I knew I just had to get you out of there. I just began to think of what He was about to do you and I just…” he trailed off shaking his head. He shivered slightly. “Anyway. I managed to throw enough punches to knock him out completely. I dragged him in the cell and locked it, but I guess when he woke up he had an extra set of keys or something. I should’ve checked, but I wasn’t exactly thinking clearly, you know?” “Yeah I know.” “When I heard you screaming, I thought maybe,” he paused, tearing up, “maybe I’d lost you.” I almost burst into tears listening to his difficulty getting the last few words out. “But you didn’t,” I managed to choke out. “And I’m so thankful for that. But, it was still horrible, hearing Him asking you what your last words were. I was almost too late.” I froze. My last words. How could I forget them? They were engraved in the depths of my heart. Had he heard me say that? I began panicking. I was so thankful for the darkness that the night brought so that he couldn’t see how red I was turning. “Uh, yeah. It was miserable.” I looked away, trying to find something outside to focus on. When I failed, I began playing with my fingers. I had to find out if he heard me or not. If he had, what was his response? If he hadn’t, well it would’ve been embarrassing for him to find out now. “So,” I said, trying to sound carefree, “did you, uh, happen to hear anything?” What? That made no sense. What did I just ask him? Did he hear anything? Ugh, subtle, Marie. “What do you mean?” He asked, extremely confused. “Uh, never mind.” I needed to try a different approach. “Um, if you had to say your last words, what would they be?”

Ta da!
“Look around,” he said. “Sunlight. I don’t believe it. I never thought I’d see it again.” “Me either.” “Ok. Reminiscing moment over. We have to find that truck.” “Right. So it looks like right now we are on the side. I’m guessing the cars would be in the back?” “That sounds right. C’mon.” I couldn’t help but smile as he took my hand again and led me to the end of the building and then to the right. “Whoa,” we said together. “That’s a lot of cars,” I said uneasily. “No biggie. We can do this. Ok, let me think. The truck that He drove us here in was a much older one, so it shouldn’t be too hard to spot.” “I see one over there!” I said hopefully as I pointed to the right. “And I see one over there,” he sighed as he pointed to the left. “Well, it has to be one of the two!” I said happily. “Let’s start with this one.” We rushed over to the rusty truck. I found the only car key on the ring and tried to jam it in there. “Not working,” I said, shot down. “Come on. It has to be the other one!” We darted around cars through the parking lot until we finally found the other old pickup. “This has to be the one,” I said, knowingly. “The tarp is still halfway in place.” “Perfect. Here, give me the key.” It fit perfectly into the slot. He flashed me a huge victory smile as the door creaked open. Of course he walked me to the other side and helped me into the passenger seat before getting in, himself. I smiled to myself. He must have one Hell of a mother who raised him right. He hopped into the driver’s seat and started the car and then did a quick victory fist pumping motion. He leaned over the seat and pulled me into a tight hug. “This is it.” “You ready to go?” “Let’s get the Hell out of here,” he said smiling. “Agreed.” I settled into the passenger seat. “Oh no,” Joe said staring intently at something beyond the parking lot. “What is it?” “That foreman dude. I guess he doesn’t stay knocked out for too long.” “Shit. Drive.” Joe stared blankly in the distance for a minute as the guy looked around searching. Finally he spotted us and began his pursuit. “Joe! Drive! Now!” He shook his head and snapped out of it and put it in gear. He backed out like a crazy person. I guess he didn’t handle pressure too well. The tires screeched as we drove blindly. The man tried to chase us, but we had a vehicle and he did not. I felt relief wash over me he turned into a tiny speck behind us on the horizon. I turned back around and settled into my seat, relaxed, until I remembered something. “Joe?” “Hm?” He asked, gripping the steering wheel tightly. “Where are we going?” “I don’t know. I’m freaking out. I don’t know. I don’t know where anything is. I don’t know where this leads. I just see desert all around us. I don’t know what to do! What if we run out of gas or—“ “Joe! Calm down. We have a full tank of gas. And this road…er…dirt path has to lead somewhere, right? It’s going to be okay,” I said as I gently placed my hand on his right arm which was tensed up on the arm rest. He let out a deep sigh. “Thanks. I needed that. Ok. We’re going to be alright. We’re going to be fine, right?” “Right,” I added confidently. I turned my attention back to the road, or what was supposed to be a road. Sand. Sand. Sand. Sand mound. Sand. This was going to be a long ride.

Wow, I love your guys' comments. "Holy cheesesticks" I am so saying that from now on. Wow, you commented fast! :D
“Any last words?” How cliché. I thought people only said that in the movies. But I had been considering my last words for a couple of days now. I sighed and whispered, “I love you, Joe.” Tears were streaming down my face. I jumped when I heard the shot. Funny, I didn’t feel a thing. I was waiting for the pain, when I looked up at His horrified expression. This confused me. I thought He took extreme pleasure in killing. Finally I realized what His problem was as I saw the blood seeping through His dirty gray shirt. My head jerked up to see a sweaty and panting Joe, his hands unsteady. Joe gently lay his gun, from where he found it, I didn’t know, down on the table, watching as He fell to the ground, before running over to me and quickly and frantically untied me. As soon as the rope was loose he jerked me up into a tight hug. I couldn’t breathe because his grip around me was so tight, but I didn’t care. I buried my head in his chest. We were both crying now. “You came for me.” “You told me to come rescue you.” I nodded as he wiped a tear from my face. “But how did you—“ “No time to explain. I’ll tell you later. Come on. We’ve got to get out of here.” I nodded and glanced over at Him. “Do you—do you think He’s dead?” “No. I got him around the stomach. People were likely to hear the gunshot so we’d better go.” “Okay, but wait!” I stopped him again before running over to Him. “What are you doing?!” he whisper-yelled at me. I bent over His body and dug in his vest pockets until I found what I was looking for: His wallet. I grinned with achievement. “Good idea!” Joe praised. “See if He has any keys.” Sure enough, He did. I grabbed the whole key ring and quickly darted out the door, Joe and me hand-in-hand. We tried to subtly go through the hallway without catching the eyes of any of the other workers. We snuck into Jay’s room and found the familiar concrete door that we knew just had to lead to the outside. I fiddled around with the keys and tried a few until I found the right one. Perfect. I took a deep breath as Joe burst through the door. I could breathe again. It felt so good. I closed my eyes and took in the fresh air. It was so light, so refreshing compared to the dense, muggy, deathly air inside. I finally opened my eyes and found Joe smiling at me.
:) Scared u for a minute there. Psh, I'd never kill off Marie!!!
