This is a video version of a letter I wrote to Q following the interview Jian Gomeshi did with Bruce Cockburn on March 31 (I believe). Thanks to Dan Payne for manning this camera, my Sony thingamabob with a 30GB hard drive, but exclusively fully automatic focusing, which is very entertaining because at the end of the day we all get to watch technology in a confused state. In 10 or 15 years we can watch this and say "Oh luh. Remember when Auto was just a child? Little Mr. Focus sure wasn't very confident back then. Nowadays look at him, luh! Got us all in focus all da time. Wicked, ol' man, wicked!"
Truth be told, it is kind of interesting watching focus shift in general. I don't mean to get all metaphysical on everybody, but I've seen it shift, and it is pretty powerful stuff. I've been in and out of bed with music all my life. While I have lingering doubts about the merit of what I do artistically, I can say that I really feel lately that I can no longer deny myself the pursuit of this entity music. I'm not sure what that means except that I know I'll never go two years without playing guitar and performing music again. Let's see where it goes.
References to the Hamilton Sound Experiment at the end of the video refer to an actual project I have begun to embrace. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in being a part of it. I'm sure you all know how to pause the video to get the address... I tell my son Ben to look for the two rectangles.
The instrumental piece I'm playing is an abridged version of A Trot Around Cobb's, a piece I originally hauled out of the Gander air about 3 in the morning halfway around the Cobb's Pond boardwalk around 10 years ago. There are few things in life as funny as the graphic on the "Don't Let You Dog Soil The Area - Bag Your Poop" sign. Funny, yet tremendously effective in portraying its true purpose. Well done, funny poop sign, well done.
