The Steelpan Research Laboratory of the University of the West Indies is pleased to announce its latest steelpan innovation, the Percussive Harmonic Instrument (pronounced "Fie"). This is the second innovation coming out of the laboratory, the first being a G-Pan which was launched in July 2007. The P.H.I. is patented in Trinidad and Tobago with international patents pending.

The P.H.I. is a fully synthesized, MIDI-based instrument with a form inspired by the ingenuity of the steelpan. The interface of the P.H.I. consists of 36 notes (3 full octaves) laid out in the cycle of 4ths and 5ths also known as the spider-web tenor (soprano) pan layout. This provides an immediately familiar interface for pannists. The P.H.I. enables the user to access authentic steelpan and indigenous tones as well as a variety of instruments through its GM tone bank similar to ones found on keyboards.

The P.H.I. provides several benefits which do not exist on the traditional acoustic steelpan such as ease of amplification exactly like any electronic instrument available on the market - it can be easily made as loud as desired. It allows the user to play any range of steelpan (from tenor to bass) through the use of mallets or fingers. The MIDI and electronic capabilities make recording and scoring music easy as on electronic keyboards. On this channel you will see the top pannists who perform with the P.H.I.
