10/Mar/2009 UTC Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has vowed to continue campaigning for greater Tibetan autonomy. The Dalai Lama made the vow in a message on Tuesday marking the 50th anniversary of a failed Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. His government-in-exile in Dharamsala, northern India, marked the occasion with a ceremony attended by about 3,000 Tibetans. The participants observed a moment of silence for the victims of last year's deadly protests in Tibetan autonomous regions in China. The Dalai Lama said in the statement that the past 50 years have brought untold suffering and destruction to Tibet's land and people who, even today, live in constant fear. He vowed to continue for the rest of his life campaigning for greater autonomy, to give Tibetans power to decide for themselves everything but foreign and military affairs. He said it might take a very long time, noting that he has seen no progress in efforts to hold dialogue with China's government. More than 10,000 Tibetan refugees live in Dharamsala. The government-in-exile plans to hold a major demonstration on Tuesday night. 2009/03/10 16:35(JST) (JST: UTC+9hrs.)

09/Mar/2009 UTC Chinese President Hu Jintao has called on Tibetan delegates to the National People's Congress to work to prevent Tibet from becoming independent. Speaking at a meeting of delegates from the Tibet Autonomous Region in Beijing on Monday, Hu said that they must combat separatism and safeguard national unity to promote long-term stability in the region. Hu also urged delegates to pursue a higher standard of living for Tibetans through stability combined with rapid economic development. The Chinese government has stepped up security in Tibetan regions ahead of Tuesday, the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising, to prevent a recurrence of last year's riots. The 1959 uprising led to the exile of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, to India. Observers say Hu was expressing unity with Tibetan delegates in an effort to curb support for the Dalai Lama within China. 2009/03/10 06:03(JST) (JST: UTC+9hrs.)

09/Mar/2009 UTC Tibetan residents of the western Chinese province of Qinghai clashed with police on Sunday. Later, 2 police cars were destroyed by explosions. The official Xinhua news agency reported that about a dozen Tibetan people were protesting before a police station in the Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in support of a Tibetan lumber truck driver who was stopped at a checkpoint. It also reported that the blasts, caused by handmade bombs, took place early Monday morning near the site of the clash. Local authorities told NHK by telephone that no one was injured in the blasts and that there are no suspects. Golog is close to the Tibetan Autonomous Region, where rioting broke out last year. Tuesday is the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule that led to their spiritual leader Dalai Lama fleeing to India. The Tibetan region and the surrounding autonomous prefectures are sealed off, and the foreign media's access to the areas has been restricted since February. There is also an increased police presence in the region. 2009/03/09 20:02(JST) (JST: UTC+9hrs.)

07/Mar/2009 A pro-Tibet rally has been held in Tokyo to mark the first anniversary of massive anti-government protests across Tibetan areas. About 200 Tibetans and their Japanese supporters gathered in a park in Tokyo on Saturday. A Japanese civic group organized the rally. A representative of the Dalai Lama's Japan office, Lhakpa Tshoko, told participants that the Chinese government says only about 20 people were killed during last year's riots, but that his officials have confirmed more than 260 deaths. He said the Chinese government is still making life difficult for the Tibetan people. The rally lasted for more than half an hour. The participants called for freedom for Tibet and demanded an improvement in the human rights situation. Next Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of a 1959 uprising, in which Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, fled into exile in India. A series of rallies are expected in more than 10 countries to protest against the Chinese government. Chinese officials have been reiterating on state-run media that China has a right to rule the Tibet Autonomous Region, and that it is keeping an eye on rallies in the area. 2009/03/07 20:36(JST) (JST: UTC+9hrs.)
