About Me:
To the martial arts family ,I wish you all well in your journey on your path to add what is yours and reject what is useless, like Lee once said ,My truth is not your truth .. Keep it simple and direct "Tim Tackett ", Peace and balance through the martial way a level us all to reach..Here are some words a student of mine wrote and I feel it might help some understand where we are comming from:
Ive been thinking substantially about the definitions that people have for what Jeet Kune Do is and what it means out there in the martial arts world, and one of the things that most surprises me is that some people are very hung up on a strict concept of what is and isnt JKD. I have read multiple books and letters written by Bruce Lee on the topic, and in none of them have I found that Sigung Lee says that JKD is only about the straight lead, the jeet tek, trapping, and the straight blast. Instead, many of Sigung Lees writings emphasize the idea of adaptability and fluidity, never growing stagnant, never getting stuck in any form or set pattern. This is why I am personally so drawn to Jeet Kune Do, because it is about the person who trains martial arts, who wants to find his or her own best expression or actualization of self through the use of their body in the most basic and honest conflict possible, a physical confrontation that threatens your safety. (I say it is honest, because no amount of pretext or pretention will save a person in this type of situation - the person is truly tested for what they are, internally and devoid of the misleadings of social norms) Now, along those lines, I do understand that there is a basic krux, a nucleus, so to speak of techniques that Sigung Lee left to his students, including but not limited to those mentioned above. I also understand that these elements must be present in order for a person to proclaim themselves a follower of Jeet Kune Do. What I do not understand, is how some of the teachers out there take the concept of no way as way, no limitation as limitation to mean limit yourself only to what Bruce taught before he passed. I mean, Jeet Kune Do is a path of constant personal, spiritual, and physical evolution, and it is a path that does not have an end point. Yes, Sigung Lees personal Jeet Kune Do ended when he passed on, but that was his JKD. His message doesnt stop because his life did, at least not in my perspective. I believe that the message was to always continue to seek, to learn, to internalize, adapt, and simplify. If we arent all seeking our own paths, then what are we doing? Isnt that the same as becoming slaves to fixed patterns, didnt Sigung Lee call this organized despair? I wonder at whether or not what is happening among some martial artists out there in the name of JKD is exactly what JKD was meant to fight against. written by : Oscar Perez
