If you're interested in ice sculpture for showy centerpieces, you don't need to use expensive silicone, you can use latex and gauze to paint a 1-sided mold over an object, then rinse the dried mold and then fill with water and freeze. For, like, novelty ice cubes size shapes, silicone works great. The form you sculpt can be a normal object, with modelling wax stuck on it to reduce over hangs and pointy bits that would break off in a mold. Molds can tear or wear out over time unless heavy duty and mde of high quality material, so you may want to make a permanent sculpture you can mke new molds of whenever you want.

For the "How to make silicone candy molds, cheap" video I was wondering if this was for candy molding only, or if it is for all food quality projects. In particular I'd like to make little ice sculptures using a mold. Could it work for that? Also are there special tools I might need to sculpt my own shapes? I am not the most artistic person, but I'd like to replicate small things I see.

Aussie crafts tend to be adult, not child oriented, while in the USA adult crafts are often large versions of children's crafts, Try e-mailing Darice, http://www.darice.com/ and ask if they have any Australian companies they wholesale to. Otherwise, you could an international order. The foam, EVA foam, is common in industry, it's probably produced and worked with for non-craft purposes, but that means it's harder to get hold of since there's no clear set up for people to be like "ooh, I want factory scraps, I'll go get some."

insulating foam also plays better with paint than furniture foam. Furniture foam is a large cell (airspace) soft sponge that keep on sucking paint, whereas insulation foam, given a heavy priming coat, will be paintable.

Pt 1. Let's talk about boulders. Usually I make really big boulders our of chicken wire covered in paper mache, or I carve Styrofoam. Some people like expanded foam (insulated or urethane) I find it too heavy unless it's supposed to be an interactive piece to take a big beating. Boulder coloring can be easily achieved by painting a priming layer, then using a rough sponge texture to make gritty texture. Latex will look too shiny, unless you want a hunk of glassy rock. Styrofoam or insulating foam is the cheaper option for coating your rock in softness...

Hi! I need to construct a 7 foot fake boulder. I've built the frame and thinking about wrapping it in soft foam for the skin (similar to your latex skin video). What is the best latex product to put on the foam? I'm guessing I'll need a couple of gallons. Any ideas or suggestions would be great! I'll use dye to give it a tan rock look. Can I touch it up with a airbrush once it is dry?? Thanks for your help!!

I'm doing some freelance product development and that's been sucking my craft-time so I can only do smaller projects. So, I've been doing stained glass on the weekends, and me and Ben are seriously experimenting with Steam Punk applications of glass--but uses where glass cannot shatter and hurt people and there's no contact with lead solder are tricky, as non-lead solder is very difficult to work with...we're brainstorming...
