I had an idea for this video and spoke with Andrea about it. The initial concept was the girls transporting a mock black box airline recorder, to the sea, to release bad memories. The metaphor of an airline crash. It became something much more once I added the ocean storm wave footage I shot in 1995.
The movie is shot almost entirely on two hand held iPhones. Yasi and I had never shot video on iPhones before. The locations we found on the way. It is a familiar route to my surfing breaks. It ended at the Makah Indian reservation, Neah Bay. A remote and excellent surf spot.
The mission was to do this with a few close friends, if it failed it could not fail because we had such a good time. No storyboard. I told the crew where to go and what to do, but they had no idea beyond the box represented everything they want to let go, and everything they want to set free. It was near freezing. It was raining. None of us had more than 3 hours sleep either night. A short December day.
Jimmy was our Koala spirit guide! He borrowed his bands van ('A Gun That Shoots Knives', Seattle Glam Punk), and drove, and provided a perfect spirit. After the first days shoot, we hoisted a disco mirror ball into the rainforest trees, with two high powered flashlights, and drank and played around a campfire, in the rain, and cold, late into the night. The next day we completed the shoot.
I relied entirely on Yasi's photo genius, and the charismatic presence of Mary and Kelly.
It became a ghost story of two sisters lost in a tsunami, returned as adults, to be at peace with their trauma.
Ghost Ship
Ghost ships are sailing
across the open sea
The wind blows cold
into our darkened faces
Eternal mountains of ice
surrounding me
No way up with these feet
to find faith in me
No way up with these feet
to find faith in me
And all my tears in the river
are filling the sea
All the tears in the river
are filling the sea
The sea of love
Grey colored thoughts
bury salty raindrops
of emptiness
into my face
The sweat of your lust
is all poured upon me
It went through my vains
forever haunting you
It went through my vains
forever haunting you
And all my tears in the river
are filling the sea
All the tears in the river
are filling the sea
The sea of love
Come sail with me
this boat into nowhere
Bright skies blinding
in the land of the light
The sun burns our skin
to heat for the night
Some wild pearls of love
and me hiding in your chest
And all my tears in the river
are filling the sea
All the tears in the river
are filling the sea
The sea of love
