In this movie from 1946, AL plays the spoiled son of a rich merchant who gets shanghaied onto one of his father's ships. The captain's cruelty eventually drives the crew to mutiny.
The movie is based on a famous book published in 1840. Its author, Richard Henry Dana, appears as one of the characters (played by Brian Donlevy). He is investigating his brother's death and wants to help ameliorate sailors' conditions.
AL's role in this fits him like a glove, but it is relatively small for a star. One could almost call the film an ensemble piece, and all of the actors are very good. Howard Da Silva as the captain is particularly memorable ("One of the things I never take to sea is a sense of humor." LOL). I was tempted to call this "Laddie and the Lads", because the love story is marginal; but it's very sweet, and so is the Spanish actress Esther Fernandez. The film is very well made; it combines the gritty realism of a noir prison drama with the romanticism of 19th century sea adventures. It has a beautiful score by the great film composer Victor Young, and the cinematography by Ernest Laszlo is fabulous. I think AL looks particularly fine in this (I love the sideburns - a much more becoming way of adapting his signature haircut to a period setting than in his other costume roles). The movie was so popular that a similar film with AL was made in 1953, BOTANY BAY (which, personally, I dont like nearly as much, except for James Mason in the role of the captain). I included the flogging scene because it is frequently mentioned. Why? Beats me. :-)
