"the sightings went up around the time we started detonating nuclear weapons, this is not an accident, it's like a big red flag went up on our planet" yes, it's also the premise for "the day the earth stood still" from 1951, regularly broadcast on TV even now. I suspect a cover up would have noticed that film and blacklisted it.
