Glorious playing. Stupendous technique allied with perfect interpretation. I used to think that Pogorelich was the finest interpreter of Scarlatti. No more.

"I feel there are plenty of pianists around who are able to play all the notes of these pieces brilliantly but without putting any feeling for the music or anything of themselves into their performance. What is so remarkable about David Smith, for me, is the mind behind the notes. I haven't heard such an intelligent and expressive player in such a long time, if ever, despite the wealth of virtuoso pianists that exist today."

Noted Music Critic in 2005 Recalls 1951 performance of Bartok piano concerto by "superb American pianist David Smith":
"I could wish for a solo oboe in the London Symphony that sounded less like a duck during the slow movement, full of bird calls that the composer heard at a resort in Asheville, NC, where he composed most of the piece, and where -- at performance I heard there ca. 1950 by a superb American pianist, David Smith (who opted to become a forest ranger), with Thor Johnson conducting -- birds outside imitated their instrumental counterparts during the slow movement."

I thought the old Polish masters had the patent on such rhythmic subtleties and rubato. I never heard another American pianist who could play like this! Even the great Russians sound too inflexible. Thanks for posting!

I agree with emtube, incredible playing. His style reminds me a bit of Sergio Fiorentino.

Everyone must know the name of David Edward Smith. I will make certain of it, count on it. The man is (I hope not was, I am hoping he is still with us ) a genius. The critics 55 years ago got it right: he is a great pianist, on par with Rubinstein, Rachmaninoff, and the rest. Absolutely right. I sing my name to that. John Bell Young

I am very interested in the videos you are posting. Especially those of your father. I have simply been dazzled by his music. I discovered your channel yesterday. This is what music is about. This is what technique is for. So many pianists stop where your father continued ad-infinitum. He shines creativity on every measure. You surely know all of these things, but I can't contain myself. Thank you.
