Rough Landing at Newark-Liberty: Flight CO224L, 3/13/10

The weather was bad, so I pressed my iPhone against the window and captured a view of the wing of my 737, to see how it would handle the 30 knot crosswinds. As you can see, we were bounced around. Thanks to our skilled captain (with 37 years of flying under his belt), the landing was uneventful, with the exception of some used "flu bags." The pilot told me that he was retiring and this was to be his last commercial flight.

While he can't compact your trash into neat cubes, this $200 movie-inspired robot is full of some cool technology, including motion and sound sensors and ten motors. Powered by a rechargable Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydroxide) battery, you can either steer him around the room using the IR remote, or use the macro keys to launch pre-selected routines. Unique features include CDS sensors located in the robot's base (the same variety in paper towel dispensers) which avoid walls or feet, and a touch pad on the remote. Testers were impressed, but you can expect the the novelty to fade quickly. More key details are in the video.
  • How Buckyballs -- the Magnetic Toy -- Are Made

You've probably heard about Buckyballs, but do you know where they come from? Can you name some other brand names? Do you know how they got their name? This 3 minute video from Toy Fair 2011 provides the answers.

Made from Neodymium -- a rare earth metal mined in China, Buckyballs are a brand name for a set of small, strong magnetic balls, sold in sets of 216 for about $30 each. Similar magnets are sold under other brand names, such as CyberCube, EuroCube, Nanodots, NeoCube, QQMag, TetraMag and Zen Magnets.
The balls are strong enough to stay in a loop for a bracelet or necklace. They can be very dangerous if two or more are ingested, because the strong magnets could block your intestines (or worse).
It is possible to make just about any shape from a set of balls, including a geodesic dome, as designed by Richard Buckminster Fuller (hence the name, "Buckyballs").
The magnets can be plated with zinc or silver. In this YouTube video, we talk with Buckyballs brand creator Jake Bronstein during Toy Fair 2011 to learn the story of Buckyballs, how they are made and where they come from.
