i've tried freebsd with my older pc about a year ago and i was dissapointed , very very bad performance and at the second boot many components was crashing again and again !! Not fast not stable doesn't have any apps ... i tried to contact support and the only help i got was irony and make laugh of my bad english.
The only good Alternative os is Mac Osx and Linux . I was remember many many years ago in a very old pc of mine i could run beos (for testing only :-( ) very well , i'm so sorry that this os never evolved or be popular, it was fast and solid.
