This Hoagy Carmichael / Ned Washington tune popped into my head yesterday and I went on a hunt for it and found the tabs at doctoruke.com (Jazzy version)
On my search I ran across this version from simpletunes2 which definitely inspired me.

Oh, if I had a voice like that...
I probably rushed this one into production. After all, I DID just learn it yesterday, but once again it's been a long time since I did a video and I was getting antsy to record SOMETHING. And I'm not happy with the video quality...(once I saw it all big and in HD the imperfections really showed up)
I've been finding that whenever I post something it's only after that when I really "find my way" with a piece and truly make it my own...so it will be interesting to see how this one develops now that I've posted it.
I keep threatening (to myself) to orchestrate some of these videos, and this one is SCREAMING for it - so if I do ever redo it, expect some bass and strings behind me - and who knows what else...

First, I have to thank woodshed over at Ukulelehunt.com for the tabs of this Roy Smeck tune. But I was actually inspired to do it at all by the video from Wininboy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW0VFI...
Secondly, sorry about all that nature going on . The pool's waterfall kind of took over the sound, and then a very loud bird near the end. Guess this is why I record inside most of the time.
This wasn't actually meant to be the way I recorded this one, as I've been working on it for several weeks now, play it much better (and differently than how I recorded it here), and really recorded this version as just a test for myself.
It was so wrought with significant mistakes I told myself that I would of course NOT post it - which is actually why I went ahead and did it.
At the risk of geeking this up a bit, I figured I'd share it as a "Uke Moment with Bob", where I actually didn't care about getting a good take.
Kind of freeing.
I'm still not ready to post the "official" recording of this, as I haven't yet chosen a style yet. On this video, you'll see me change tempo all over the place, which I'm doing just to play around, not really considering I'd post this (well, maybe a little, if things went well.)
This piece marked a new level of challenge for me, going from simply playing chords, to taking on something with an actual melody and some fingerwork. Turns out I really enjoy it, but am early in developing any skills to be sure (even analyzing carefully how I cut may nails these days - yes, I'm officially ukified.)

This was completely impromptu. I was actually sitting down to record something else and this was my camera angle test (which obviously needs some adjustment).
I really had no intention of singing this at all, AND this is the first time I've really sung since I've had a cough for a month and a half (except for my last "Let's never stop falling in Love" video, which happened during a 48 hour return of my voice enough to record that.)
This chart, along with a lot of great other can be found here: http://www.scorpex.net/Uke/
By the way, the song I went out to record is an instrumental.
Ok, I've beat this back story to death.
This is "Girl From Ipanema."
It was written in 1962, with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes with English lyrics written later by Norman Gimbel.

Here's the sequence of events:
1. Jodi (http://www.youtube.com/user/helloukulele) suggests I cover this song.
2. I realize I don't know this song, so go seeking it out on Grooveshark (http://bit.ly/9u1uqh) so I can hear it.
3. Find it, listen to it.
4. Spend a few minutes figuring out the chords.
5. Get grandiose ideas of "production value" ("Oh, I could do THIS and THIS, and add THIS.)
6. Immediately come down with a cold that takes away my voice for a solid two weeks, while all the while I'm chomping at the bit to record this song.
7. Voice comes back yesterday and I take on recording it.
8. 48 thousand takes later, I'm just getting irritated that I get to the last measure or so and screw up.
9. Finally get a take that doesn't make me sick.
10. Bring the video into my editing software only to realize that my lighting has made a good chroma key virtually impossible and that the best I can get is something with a little white halo around it.
11. Decide not to worry about it and add some random OTHER "ray" effect to maybe "cover" for the bad chroma key.
12. Completely abandon my production value ideas (multi tracks with percussion, etc.) and just post that darn thing.
Ta da.
This is a song from Pink Martini.
There is very little information I can find on the actual writers, and there were certainly no chord charts available so I had to take some creative license throughout this one - making up chords, and chopping out most of the entire instrumental section.
But even with all the compromises and frustrations, it was fun, and definitely one I'm adding to my permanent repertoire.
Thanks, Jodi, for the invitation to take this one on!
