I've been working on this tune for quite a while now (including recording, mixing, mastering). Hope you people like it!
I was looking around on YouTube for inspiration (no shortage of that here!) for Appalachian music, I found the Cuckoo song. The version that caught my attention the most was the one sung by Gregory Paul. I really liked it, and I wanted to do my own version. The song is originally an English folk song that later immigrated to the States. The person that really made it famous was an American folk singer named Clarence Ashley. But is has also been done by other famous artists as well (Bob Dylan and Taj Mahal for example) When I was starting out the song the basic rythm came first (the snare drum is actually me clapping my hands). Then I came up with the octave mandolin riff. After that the chords (only 2, LOL). And then I thought that adding a slide guitar would give it that more old time/country/western/bluegrass feel. With the banjos sawmill tuning, and using a capo on the 2nd fret, I'm in the key of A. The singing is inspired from several clips her on YouTube.
After finishing recording and everything, I decided that I wanted to do something different this time around. So, I made a half-ass music video! :D
------------------------ Lyrics: Gonna build me a log cabin on a mountain so high So I can see Willie as he goes on by
Oh the coo-coo is a pretty bird She wobbles when she flies She never hollers coo-coo 'Til the fourth day of July
I've played cards in England I've played cards in Spain I'll bet you ten dollars I'll beat you in this game
Jack of diamonds, Jack of diamonds I've known you from old Now you've robbed my poor pockets Of my silver and my gold
Oh the coo-coo is a pretty bird She wobbles when she flies She never hollers coo-coo 'Til the fourth day of July
