the story came from a book, alexander romance writtne at the end of 6th century, that was about the time mr.muhammad visited syria, heard thestory and copied it in koran.
the other mythical story he copied was that of pious men who slept in the cave for 200 years. this story was a christian propaganda, but muhammad copied it to impress beduins and perhaps to lure christians.
he believed the beduins will never find out the sources of both stories.
