Utah Valley University's quest to repeat as the Great West Conference Women's Tournament Champion came to an end Friday afternoon with an 82-64 semifinal loss to No. 1 seed Chicago State at the UCCU Center.
With the loss, the Wolverines, who won six of their last nine games, end the season 8-21 overall. Utah Valley beat Texas-Pan American 81-65 in the quarterfinals Wednesday to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive season.
"This wasn't the best representation of ourselves and I would hate for this game to define the last month and a half of the season because we became a pretty good basketball team," UVU coach Cathy Nixon said. "We ran up against a Chicago State team which was a difficult match up for us and they're a pretty good team. They rolled through everybody."
Chicago State's Tressa Beckel scored the first six points of the game, and the Cougars never looked back.
The Wolverines shot a respectable 39 percent from the field, but couldn't overcome 25 turnovers, which led to 35 Chicago State points. The Cougars ended up shooting 44.6 percent from the field.
Jenna Johnson paced the Wolverines with 17 points, while Sammie Jensen added 12 points and 11 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the year.
Abbie Beutler answered with a 3-pointer and Kim Bell added a bucket in the paint to cut the lead to one with 17:21 left in the first half, but the Wolverines were never able to take the lead.
UVU had the CSU lead down to one at 8-7 on another lay-up by Bell, the Cougars went on a 12-5 run over the next six minutes to lead by 10 at 22-12.
Chicago State (21-9) built its first-half lead to as high as 14 points with 3:53 left in the half, however, the Wolverines, cut the lead to nine with 1:11 left in the half on a basket by Jensen. The Cougars, who have won 15 of their last 16 games, led 37-26 at the break.
The Wolverines shot 38.5 percent from the field in the first half, but turned the ball over 15 times, which led to 21 CSU points.
Johnson scored five quick points to open the half, and Kaycee Mansfield added a lay-up in UVU's 7-3 to whittle the lead down to seven with 17:14 left, but that was as close as the Wolverines would get the remainder of the way.
Chicago State, which won the league with an 11-1 mark, will play North Dakota for the GWC Tournament Championship Saturday at 4 p.m. in the UCCU Center.
Beckel led the Cougars with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Courtney Waldron and Janay Dockery added 15 each.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Sammie Jensen was named to the GWC All-Tournament team as she averaged 18 points and 12.5 rebounds for the Wolverines in their two games.

South Dakota was the only team to beat Utah Valley during the Great West Conference regular season, and Friday night in the men's semifinals of the conference tournament, the Coyotes struck again, taking down the No. 1-seed Wolverines, 72-70, but it came with a little controversy.
With 4.6 seconds left, USD's Jake Thomas hit the second of two foul shots to give the Coyotes the two-point advantage. UVU's Isiah Williams, who led the Wolverines with a 21 points, took the inbounds pass and drove down the right side. Just past half court, in an attempt to dribble around a defender, he was called for stepping out of bounds, but video replay seemed to show otherwise.
Ironically, Williams hit a 30-foot 3-pointer immediately following the whistle that would have given the Wolverines a one-point lead with just over two seconds remaining.
With 2.1 seconds left, UVU fouled and USD missed both shots, and Jordan Swarbrick's shot from three-quarter court rimmed off as time expired.
"Give South Dakota all the credit in the world, but we didn't not play our best game," UVU coach Dick Hunsaker said. "They got their shooters on track early. It was a tough game. Congratulations to South Dakota. They're the defending tournament champions and they played like it."
In the second half alone, the game was tied or the lead changed hands 10 times.
With 10:36 left in the game, the Wolverines (19-11) trailed by seven points, but they slowly whittled away at the lead. Geddes Robinson hit a pair of foul shots and Holton Hunsaker nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two with 8:17 left.
After the Coyotes (18-14) built the lead back up to five with 5:33 left, Swarbrick hit two foul shots and Hunsaker hit another 3-pointer to tie the game at 67-67 with 3:09 left. Two minutes later, Hunsaker connected on a driving lay-up to tie the game for the final time with 1:10 left.
Behind Williams' 21 points, Ben Aird posted his sixth double-double of the year with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Hunsaker added 13 and Robinson recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Wolverines led by a many as three points in the first half before the Coyotes built a lead of seven with 13:11 left in the half. Six minutes later, Aird converted a lay-up to give the Wolverines a one-point lead.
In the last seven minutes of the half, neither team led by more than three points before Coyotes entered the locker room with a one-point lead at 37-36.
For the game, Utah Valley shot 44.6 percent from the field, while USD, which shot just 20 percent (3-of-15) from the foul line, hit 52.6 percent from the field. Utah Valley connected on 15-of-22 foul pitches.
The Coyotes will play North Dakota Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game.
Utah Valley won the 2010-11 Great West Conference regular season championship after going 11-1 in league play. The Wolverines were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll and in addition to going first, had the league's Player of the Year in Williams, Coach of the Year in Hunsaker and had five others earn All-Conference awards.
