Imagine you’ve saved $50,000 over the past several years. Most reasonable people would use this as a downpayment on a house or invest it. Those yield safe returns.
I’ve decided to do the polar opposite, and film a travel show instead. It’s basically like taking a ridiculous sum of money and dropping it on a single number in roulette. Actually, the odds are probably even worse than that.
Downside:
I lose $50,000 creating some YouTube videos that get 200 hits.
Upside:
I get to do the most amazing job in the world for the rest of my life.
(note: I already have one of the best jobs in the world, taking pictures at peoples weddings. I will continue to do this because I truly do love it.)
Worst case, I get to see some pretty amazing places around the world, and learn a pretty hard lesson financially.
So why not even shop around to television networks, Netflix, and every other streaming service looking for the next best travel show?
I want to do this show on my own terms.
I would rather risk $50,000 of my own money to build my own dream, than to sit in meetings, sign contracts, and give away my ability to have full control of the show. There’s also a motivation that comes with having full responsibility.
It’s easier than ever to distribute online and (hopefully) find the right audience. I’m not looking for 4 million people to watch the show in between commercials on prime time, I’m looking for 500 or 1000 photographers and entrepreneurs that get inspired by seeing amazing experiences around the world. The idea of reaching that audience, and having the conversations that they inspire over the next years, makes the risk worth it. Again, worst case, I got to travel the world (and some of it was with the love of my life).
So, if your big idea is something you can create internally, I say you do it. You don’t have to wait for a publisher to give you the thumbs up, or a studio to give you the time. Just go out and do it. Start now. Most things that cost hundreds of thousands to do 10 years ago cost just hundreds to do now. So what’s stopping you?
