Welcome to the second episode of what David Wild of Rolling Stone has called "the most promising Web music series" of 2010. Created by Greg Mitchell, former editor at legendary Crawdaddy magazine and author of nine books, it offers a highly personal look at several decades of rock 'n roll -- from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello. This month: On helping to create the very first magazine article about Bruce Springsteen after hanging out with him at Sing Sing Prison in December 1972. If you missed the trailer and episode one (on Fats Domino and other New Orleans piano greats) for the series you can find the link on this channel. Don't forget to subscribe! To carry or sponsor this series write epic1934@aol.com. (Series shot and edited by Andy Mitchell of "MacAwesome" fame.)

When Upton Sinclair, famous author and lifetime Socialist, won the Democratic primary for governor of California in 1934 in a landslide--leading the greatest mass movement in the state's history--all hell broke loose there and across the country. To defeat Sinclair, his opponents invented the modern political campaign, led by advertising geniuses and spin doctors -- and the first wide use of the screen to destroy a candidate (created by MGM's Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg). The race, in fact, featured Hollywood's first major jump into politics. FDR became embroiled in the heart of it, and dozens of other famous figures played key roles, from Hearst and H.L. Mencken to Katharine Hepburn and Will Rogers. "The Campaign of the Century," published by Random House in 1992, won the Goldsmith Book Prize, drew wide coverage, and inspired a PBS documentary. Long out of print, it now appears in new editions, including, for the first time, digital, this autumn. A new edition of my award-winning book "The Campaign of the Century" has just appeared in the "classics" series from PoliPoint Press. It tells the story of the incredible 1934 race for governor of California by muckraking Socialist author Upton Sinclair--and how it took the invention of modern media politics to defeat him and his mass movement after he swept the Democratic primary. The campaign also marked Hollywood's first all-out entry into politics, including the first use of the screen to defeat a candidate--via faked newsreels (which I discovered 20 years ago) produced by MGM's legendary producer Irving Thalberg. "Nothing is unfair in politics," he explained later. Studio bosses, led by Louis B. Mayer, threatened to move to Florida if Sinclair was elected. Most of them also docked all of their actors and workers a day's pay for contributions. Everyone from Katharine Hepburn and James Cagney to Will Rogers and Charlie Chaplin got swept up in it. The outrages of the right directly inspired the birth of the modern liberal-dominated Hollywood we know today. The book, winner of the Goldsmith Book Prize, also details the amazing EPIC (End Poverty in California) movement and the creation of all of the modern campaign aspects and dirty tricks--including hiring outside "spin doctors" to manage campaigns--that put the original "Mad Men" in charge. Order the book here (and e-editions coming in a few days): http://bit.ly/cLw8Uu Contact me at: epic1934@aol.com Credit for this video: Lyn Goldfarb and Blackside.

Roy and the Everly Bros. were my favorite two acts back then. I was young, but will never forget those days. Some really good music.
