The physics behind this kind of throw is different from the typically seen sports knife throw. The typical knife throw has a number of rotations depending on the distance from the object and how many revolutions the knife will make in that given distance. The flight path of the knife in this movie has only one half of a rotation. The way he holds his hand and the spike stabilizes the flight path with a reduced rate of rotation. So, it more or less slides out of his hand while he swings his arm.
